The Role of the School Counselor
School Counselors are vital members of the education team at Wilmot Union High School. They work with all students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development and career development, ensuring that today's students are prepared to be college, career and civic ready graduates. Counselors see students for individual appointments, during large group lessons, and in small groups as needed. Parents or teachers are able to request that the school counselor speak with a student.
The Role of the School Social Worker
School Social Workers serve as a vital link between school, home, and community. They collaborate closely with students, families, and staff to assess all barriers that may be affecting a child's educational adjustment or engagement in learning. School Social Workers are accessible to all students to create individualized interventions to restore social, emotional, behavioral, and academic areas. In these areas, School Social Workers meet with students individually or in a small group setting. Referring and supporting families to find resources such as outside mental health agencies, housing, food, and transportation etc. are a key part of the role. School Social Workers understand that home, school and community are all connected and working together as a team is an imperative part of student success.
The Role of the School Psychologist
School psychologists provide direct support and interventions to students; consult with teachers, families, and other school-employed mental health professionals (i.e. school counselors, school social workers) to improve support strategies; implement and manage 504 plans; evaluate and support students under special education; work with school administrators to improve school-wide practices and policies; and collaborate with community providers to coordinate needed services.
