1-13-12 (Yes, it was a Friday)

The Wilmot Academic Decathlon team won it’s second consecutive Regional and it’s 4th in the 5 past years at UW-Whitewater.

In so doing the team secured an automatic bid to Wisconsin’s 28th annual Academic Decathlon State Competition in March in Wisconsin Dells. The Panthers bested 10 other teams at the event that had Division-1 Sun Prairie placing 2nd overall and Division-2 Mount Horeb H.S. in 3rd. Other Southern Lakes conference schools including Westosha Central, Union Grove, and Burlington finished 4th, 5th, and 7th respectively.

There were also many individual accomplishments worth noting:
Sophomore Arie Deeter took the 2nd place red ribbon in Music in the Honors Division.

Sophomore Caitlin Griffin won the red ribbon in Art, also in the Honors Division.

Junior Nick DeCaro collected two ribbons, one red for Music and one 3rd place white ribbon in Language & Literature in the Scholastic Division.

Senior Vanessa Howell also took two ribbons, one red for her Speech and one white for her Essay in the Varsity Division.

Junior Kelly Senter won a pair of 1st place blue ribbons for Art and Language & Literature and added two white ribbons in Music and Econ. Kelly placed 2nd overall in the Scholastic Division at the regional with a score of 5,061.3 points.

Sophomore Carter Dybing led the team with 5 individual blue ribbons in Music, Art, Econ, Science, and Language & Literature. Carter also won the overall blue ribbon for placing 1st overall in the Varsity Division with 5,216.3 points. Although not confirmed, we have a sneaky suspicion that Carter’s Music score of 800 may be the highest in the state in the Varsity Division or maybe in the entire state regardless of division. Stay tuned for an update in the near future.

Senior Erik Barron followed closely with 4 individual blue ribbons for his Music, Science, Econ, and Essay scores. Erik also earned two red ribbons in Art and Language & Literature, pushing his total to 6 individual ribbons, a team high. Erik too won the overall blue ribbon for placing 1st overall in the Scholastic Division with 5,834.3 points.

Both Erik and Carter received $200 cash scholarships from the Coburn Company and individual trophies for their top individual scores.

The most improvement on the team was achieved by sophomore Abbey Chappell. Abbey collected 3 red ribbons and one white in Art, Econ, Interview, and Essay respectively. She also placed 3rd overall and won a white ribbon in the Honors Division with a team leading 5,859.4 points. Abbey went from being the 6th highest scorer on the team at Locals to highest overall by Regionals. Abbey is also a 3-sport athlete!

Each member of the team received a blue ribbon for the team’s 1st place finish and a team trophy that will be on display in the office beginning next week. The Panther team also posted the 2nd highest Division-2 school score throughout Wisconsin.

Congrats Academic Decathletes and good luck at State!

[UPDATE]

The top scoring scholars from the statewide Regional Competition (1-13-12) were released by the Wisconsin Academic Decathlon yesterday. Wilmot’s very own Kelly Senter became the first decathlete in school history to be named a top scholar in a tested category. (Six years ago Andrew Lewis tied with several other decathletes with a perfect speech at Regionals) She posted the top score, regardless of division, in Art with a mark of 780 points out of a possible 1,000. Upwards of 540 students attempted this test statewide. Kelly almost did it twice! She was 2nd statewide trailing by only one question on Language and Literature test. For her accomplishment Kelly will be recognized on stage during the State awards banquet in March and receive a certificate enabling her to apply for a direct scholarship to several participating Wisconsin institutions.
