A team from Wilmot won the 1st Annual State Finance and Investment Challenge Bowl this past Tuesday held at the UW-Madison campus. Wilmot competed against eight other schools in a single-elimination tournament who had advanced from their respective regional competitions held earlier in the school year. (Wilmot won and advanced from the Milwaukee Regional)
The Wilmot team was comprised of seniors Robb Evans and Mitch Marks and juniors Cara Dowell and Mandy Aug. Robb Evans, team captain, dominated the competition with his rapid reflexes and his mastery of Financial Literacy and Economics. Mitch Marks also heavily contributed to the team’s victory. Coach Don Serkowski was elated that not only did the team win the championship, but that Evans ended his stellar extra-curricular academic career as a state champion. “Robb has been the most decorated champion in our school’s well accomplished competitive history, the title of state champion is well deserved.” Serkowski also hopes that the example of this team inspires future Wilmot students to not only become more financially savvy, but also to study rigorously over the course of the next year in preparation to defend the championship. “Whoever these students are, they have enormous shoes to fill,” commented Serkowski.
The Panthers first defeated Madison West in the 1st round and went on to beat D.C. Everest to advance to the championship match. The Wilmot students then faced a team from Milwaukee Pius XI which they beat by a score of 175-155 in the 30-question lightning round.
For their efforts the team took home the hefty, newly minted traveling trophy, and each team member received a 1st place plaque and $50.00 cash.
The event was spearheaded by the efforts of Asset Builders of America, Inc. who have dedicated themselves to furthering financial and economic education throughout the state of Wisconsin. After seven years of organizing separate regional competitions around the state, Asset Builders was able to bring everyone together for the first ever state championship. The students from Wilmot want to thank all volunteers involved for the opportunity to compete in such an enjoyable and meaningful competition.
