Game Review: Left 4 Dead 2

Left 4 Dead 2 is a first-person shooter developed by Valve Software. It is a four-player cooperative game that requires you to use team work to survive the zombie apocalypse. You start off in a safe room, where zombies cannot get to you.

Once you leave the safe room, though, the zombies spawn and are ready to attack you and your team on sight. You must fight them off with weapons you find around the levels. For example, you start off with pistols and have a choice of one other weapon, like a shotgun or an SMG. You can choose to swap your pistol for the game’s new feature, melee weapons. For close-quarters combat, melee weapons are a perfect choice to fight off the zombies. Later on in the campaign (set of levels), you will find more powerful weapons, like assault rifles and sniper rifles.

Left 4 Dead is great!

Left 4 Dead is great!

This is where Left 4 Dead 2 gets its re-playability. The weapons of each campaign are randomly spawned in the level. The same can be said for the zombies, zombies will be chosen at random by the “AI Director”. There are regular zombie, and then there are “uncommon-common” that have specific traits. For example, Hazmat zombies are invulnerable to fire.

There is also a group of eight zombies called “Special Infected”. The “Hunter” pounces on the survivors and rips them to shreds. The “Smoker” drags survivors away with his tongue. The “Boomer” vomits on the survivors to attract a horde. The”Jockey” rides on a survivor’s back and controls them, walking them away from the other survivors. The “Spitter” spits acid on you that hurts more the longer you are in it. Finally, the “Charger” chargers and grabs one survivor and starts pummeling them into the ground.

There are five campaigns that span 23 levels. Dead Center is a fight to get to a mall. Dark Carnival takes place in a carnival with clowns and all. Swamp Fever takes place in the swamps. Hard Rain take place in a city. Finally, The Parish takes place in New Orleans. The survivors are Nick, Ellis, Coach, and Rochelle. Nick is a gambling con-man who traveled to the south. Ellis is a mechanic with a heavy accent. He tells a bunch of crazy stories about his friend Keith getting hurt. Coach was a coach of a sport. He is big and muscular and loves chocolate. Finally, Rochelle is a newscaster that traveled south to report on the zombie outbreak.

There is also online modes. Versus pits four player-controlled survivors against four player-controlled special infected. Scavenger makes the survivors travel around a map gathering gas cans to power up a generator. The generator controls how much time the survivors have. The special infected must do everything in their power to stop the survivors from filling up the generator. Finally, Realism removes the outline around the survivors and removes the outline from weapons. This makes the game very difficult, even on easy difficulty settings.

Overall, Left 4 Dead 2 is a great game that improves on the original’s concept without changing what made the first one great. The game feels fresh and new and can be very addictive. If you like zombies, you’ll love this game.

Paranormal Activity

Last night, I went with a friend to see the movie, Paranormal Activity. It is a very creepy movie. Remember those youtube videos that have boring images that you’re supposed to stare at? The videos where this happens…?

Those with faint hearts: DON’T WATCH

Paranormal Activity is like that, only throughout the entire movie. It starts off slow and funny; nothing out of the ordinary really happens at first. But as the movie progresses, you start to realize why everyone’s been talking about this movie. The suspense in knowing that something is about to happen is murder. That’s what this movie plays off of, really. SUSPENSE. (ahem)

I came away from the movie trembling a little. I don’t care if you think i’m a wimp for that; it was just really scary (and only four people were in the entire theater, including me, so that didn’t help). So yeah, watch this movie.

9 Movie Review

Imagine a movie with the best animation of the year. Now think of a awesome concept with great characters. This is the movie 9. Directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov this movie could have been a smashing hit.

The graphics in the movie 9 raised the bar to a hole new level. The characters and scenery where unimaginable detailed. The movement of the characters was smooth and clear. Although the graphics was not the only thing that made the movie good. The characters in the movie where very well played out. Each of the main characters had its own unique style and personality. The villain in the story was very basic and has been used before but not in the same way. The villain is a robot brain that the military took and turned into a weapon. Then the robot got a mind of its own and turned on the humans. It is a classic plot that has been used many time for an example iRobot.

Even with all this that was put into this movie it still was not the movie you would hope for. Although the graphics where amazing the story line is hard to follow. There was not much of a story that was told about the main characters and their background. This was very disappointing and made the movie not as fun to watch. The movie also failed to have a good story and this hurt it a lot. This is only one thing that was bad about the movie. The movie would have been better if it would have took more time on the background to tell a story then come out with a sequel. They also could have had a little more detail on way each character was the way they where. Unfortunately they didn’t leading to a horrible movie.

In the end the movie gets a bad review by almost anyone who saw it. It was a good thought and could have been the best movie of the year but it wasn’t. Although they did have the ending left open for the sequel it will be interesting to see how it plays out.
